It is often said that Winter and early spring are bad planting times--but not so with most natives. You might try lowbush blueberry-vaccinium augustifolium; highbush blueberry-vaccinium corymbosum; Elderberry-sambucus canadensis; spicebush-lindera benzoin; winterberry (holly) Ilex verticillata or serviceberry-amelanchier arboriea --these are either shrubs or small trees native to your area. (Blueberries, however, would be hard to get right now)
Reply:That%26#039;s not a really good time of the year for planting. Plus it sounds like your mom has a very particular eye for the plants that she has. You may want to consider giving her a dual gift - a gift certificate to her favorite local garden center, and a rock-solid promise to drive her and enjoy the day with her while she chooses something new to tend in her garden.
